South Africa

The presence of Mota-Engil in South Africa dates back to 1976, with the establishment of Cosamo, a logistics company, which plays a key role in the efficiency  of the operative and equipment management in the African markets.

 

Currently, Mota-Engil Africa is present in this market, supporting the regional management of operations in Africa from Johannesburg.

Angola

Angola has an importance and unique symbolism for Mota-Engil, because the Group started operations in this country in 1946.

 

Currently, the Groups is present in the construction and public works area through Mota-Engil Angola, the largest company under Angolan law operating in this market, with relevant works in the country’s development and an example is the recent urban requalification of the Bay of Luanda.

 

In the environmental field, Mota-Engil is present through VISTA WASTE, company in charge for urban cleaning and waste collection in cities such as Luanda and Benguela.

 

In landscaping projects and works, Mota-Engil is present through VBT.

Cape Verde

The internationalisation to Cape Verde in the sectors of public works and civil construction started in 1995 with the construction of Hotel Trópico and afterwards with the construction of the New Praia Airport.

 

Maintaining since then a relevant presence in the market of Civil Construction and Public Works, the Group is also represented by two companies under local law: Penta, Engenharia e Construção, Lda., operating in the rental of equipment, and AGIR, Ambiente e Gestão Integrada de Resíduos, Lda., focused on the collection of Municipal Solid waste.

Ghana

Since the second half of 2012, with the presentation of the New Strategic Plan “Ambition 2.0” which defined the geographic expansion of the Group in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has been the object of careful analysis, with the first contract in the area of Engineering and Construction in June 2013 concerning the regularization of Accra coastline, thus emerging the possibility of returning to a market where the Group previously operated with success.

Malawi

The presence of Mota-Engil in Malawi began in 1990, through a branch of Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção in that country and more recently with the establishment of Mota-Engil (Malawi) Limited, a company under local law.

 

After the execution of some construction and rehabilitation projects in the national road network, the recognition of the credibility, of the investment capacity and quality of services provided opened the doors to the Group assertion, not only with public entities but also with private economic agents.

Thus, the environment was conducive to the development of a new business area, the port operation sector through Malawi Shipping Company, subsidiary of the Group with the concession of 4 ports in Lake Malawi awarded in 2013 for 35 years.

Mozambique

In Mozambique, a country where Mota-Engil is present since 1991, the Group operates in the areas of Engineering and Construction, Waste Management, Logistics and Road Concessions.

 

Through Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção, the company operates specially in the segment of public works, with Emocil being responsible for civil construction and real estate.

 

More recently it was established Roads of Zambezi, company responsible for the construction of the new Tete bridge, ensuring the management of its road concession in a 700 km extension, and also Ecolife, company ensuring waste management in the city of Maputo.

 

The landscaping services are represented by Vibeiras. 

São Tomé and Príncipe

Operating in this country since 2005, the Group, represented by Mota-Engil S. Tomé and Príncipe, focuses on civil construction and public works, having developed some of the most relevant projects in this market, such as the rehabilitation of the Príncipe Airport.

 

The constant search for new projects, businesses and opportunities is one of the goals of the company, together with the execution of some projects for private clients.

Zambia

As happened in Ghana, after the presentation of the New Strategic Plan “Ambition 2.0”, in 2012, which defined the geographic expansion of the Group in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa, Zambia emerged as one of the markets with the greatest investment potential.

 

This time, in June 2013 it has been awarded to the Group its first contract, with the project “Great East Road”, involving several civil construction and rehabilitation works, in a global contract worth 118 million euros. 

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is one of the more recent bets of the Mota-Engil Group.

 

This time, the Group won its first contract in 2014 with a project to carry out construction and support works to coal extraction, in a global contract worth 191 million euros.

Uganda

Since the second half of 2012, with the presentation of the New Strategic Plan “Ambition 2.0” which defined the geographic expansion of the Group in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa, Uganda has been the object of careful analysis, with the first contract in June 2014 concerning the expansion of the Northern Bypass highway, in the capital Kampala, expecting a growth in activity in this market with a recent presence. 

Rwanda

In 2015, Mota-Engil started operations in Rwanda through the expansion work of Kigali’s Airport, the country’s capital.

In September 2016, through a joint-venture led in 75% by Mota-Engil Africa, the Group signed an agreement for the construction, operation and maintenance of Bugesera’s New International Airport, for a 25-year period, extendable for a further 15 years, depending on funding conditions (“Financial Close”).

Tanzania

Mota-Engil started operating in Tanzania in 2017, by participating, in consortium, in the design and construction project of a 202 km section of railway between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, whose purpose, in its full length, is to connect Dar Es Salam to the neighbouring countries of Ruanda and Burundi. 

Guinea-Conakry

Mota-Engil started operations in Guinea-Conakry in 2017, through the signing of a contract with Societé Anglogold Ashanti to provide mining services at Siguiri gold mine.

Ivory Coast

Mota-Engil signed in September 2017 a contract for urban cleaning, collection and transportation of municipal waste in the capital Abidjan for a 7-year period, with the contract including service provision to 4.6 million inhabitants, making available 2.000 employees and 280 vehicles.

Cameroon

In August 2017, Mota-Engil signed a contract to rehabilitate the Omnisport Roundé Adja stadium and build a four star hotel, and the infrastructures are aimed at supporting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019.
